Geoffrey Chaucer made the Canterbury tales astonishing, but only one tale had really caught my attention. The tale I liked most is the Knight’s tale for it is a romantic- tragedy which is the type of story I want most. In this tale, it is the villain is the one who died. This tale proved things about love.
The Knight’s tale is a tale about two knights from Thebes who was imprisoned by Theseus, the duke of Athens. One morning in the prison tower, Palamon sees Emelye and cries his love for her, this was heard by Arcite whom falls in love with her as well. Time passed, Arcite was freed by Theseus. Arcite worked on Emelye’s chamber in disguise for he wants to be with her. Palamon escaped from prison and encounters Arcite in the woods. They confronted each other and had a fight which was stopped upon the arrival of Theseus. Theseus proposed a duel and whoever wins may gain the hand Emelye. Palamon then prays to marry Emelye; Emelye prays to stay unmarried; and Arcite prays for victory. Arcite wins, but he died beacause of Saturn. In the end, Palamon and Emelye married each other and lived a happy life.
On my opinion, Arcite deserves what had happened to him. The love he’s saying is not his love for Emelye but the love for himself. He prayed for his victory unlike Palamon whose love is real.
This tale made me realize three things:
· LOVE CONQUERS ALL – Any kind of relationship can be disregarded when love enters. In our time, it is very common for friends to fight over one person. In this tale Palamon and Arcite fought over Emelye and hated each other. According to what I’ve read they have a close brotherly bond. In spite of their relationship, it was destroyed with their love for Emelye.
· TRUE LOVE IS NOT SELFISH- If your love for someone is not a fruit of selfishness, it will be given to you. If your love is like the love given to you by God, it will lead you to happiness. It’s like the love of Palamon for Emelye. He wanted to win the duel not for victory, but for him to be able to marry Emelye.
· DESTINY WILL LEAD YOU TO EACH OTHER- Many people believe in “destiny”. Count me in. Destiny is said to be as sequence of events that is inevitable and unchangeable. It is like Emelye and Palamon, they didn’t do anything for them to be together. It’s just the natural order of things; it’s just what the future wants them to be.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” -- 1 Corinthians 13:4-6
